Cambodia’s most famous heritage site began 2026 in a cautious mood. According to figures released by Angkor Enterprise, the state body that manages ticketing for the Angkor Archaeological Park, the park welcomed 387,772 international visitors during the first half of the year, generating roughly 18.47 million US dollars in ticket revenue. Both figures were down by about a third compared with the same period in 2025.

The 401-square-kilometre park in north-west Siem Reap province is home to 91 temples built between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, and it remains Cambodia’s single strongest tourism brand. Analysts attribute the softer start to the year to a mix of global and regional economic caution, border tensions earlier in the cycle, and reputational noise around online-scam operations elsewhere in the region — factors largely outside the control of local guides and operators.

For the guiding community in Siem Reap, the message is less about the headline decline and more about where the opportunity now sits. With fewer but higher-intent travellers arriving, the value of a multi-day, expertly guided experience rises. Deep-history circuits, sunrise-to-sunset private tours, and add-on cultural experiences all help convert a single temple visit into several days of local spending.

The Online Guide Association encourages members to focus on what the data rewards: longer stays, direct relationships with travellers, and storytelling that turns a stone gallery into a living history. As the year progresses, the combination of a recovering source-market mix and a more experienced, better-equipped local guide network is expected to steadily rebuild Angkor’s visitor economy.
